Lighting your lantern
Use what you have to light your lantern, any battery or solar operated flameless light -
eg. fairy lights, bike light, small torch, balloon light, keyring light

balloon light or keyring light for small lanterns
keyring torch for small to medium lanterns
battery operated fairy lights for medium to large lanterns

Steps to make a simple animal head
(Medium to Large kits)
Make a square base with 4 short sticks, add 2 triangles at the sides and a tiny snout, for a simple animal head
add ear shapes and antlers if you wish!
Here is a papered and decorated version of the animal head

Plant based glues

We've used plant based glues in our workshops - here are some simple, eco-friendly recipes you can make at home, adult help required:

Ingredients
For 1 medium lantern

Rice Glue
10g rice flour
200ml water
1tsp salt


Potato Glue
1 tsp potato starch
a little cold water
mug of boiling water

Rice Glue : Method
  • Mix rice flour and salt with a little cold water to a paste
  • Heat in a saucepan, stirring until it thickens
  • It will thicken more as it cools
  • It should be more like thick jam consistency
  • Apply with sponge or large flat brush
  • Will store in fridge for a few days

Potato Glue : Method
  • In a mug, mix 1 teaspoon potato starch with cold water to a paste
  • Top up with boiling water
  • Keep stirring until it thickens
  • It should be more like thin jam (but not too runny)
  • Apply with sponge or large flat brush
  • (Does not store, but can be added to compost)
